Bedtime Happens Every Night

Dr. Spock said bedtime came around too often for it to be a battle every night. As a parent I paid full attention to my children all day long,  my time for myself and my husband came after the children went to bed in a regular soothing routine of bath, individual attention for each child, a familiar story and bed. New reading material was brought out during the day when the children were bright and happy. Our favorite story was the Velveteen Rabbit, Our favorite books were the Lewis Narnia books, the  beautiful Michael Hague books, Richard Scarey...Robert Munsch.

Most TV too Violent

I felt nothing on television was suitable for children that was not made by Jim Henson, so they could watch the Muppet Show with us once a week, and share our happiness. I was flexible about exceptions like on trips or having visitors. I loved my kids a lot, and used to sneak into the bedroom to see the angelic sleeping faces. If they had not been in bed, my stock of patience might have been worn out, and the last thing I would do would be sneak into the bedroom in case the child was still awake.

Awful hard Parenting

I observe that the children today get less sleep, and watch more TV.  Tired children do not learn and have difficulty coping. They are whining and stubborn crybabies at best. A cycle of tired parent and tired child can lead to bad habits of yelling at the child, then feeling guilty and overcompensating with " false love" by letting the child do what he or she wants. While it seems simple to let the child stay up, the parent has to work ten times as hard to please the child. It is much less work to put a child in bed at the same time with a routine.

HOH kid gets Exhausted

When the child is hard of hearing complete exhaustion can happen any time. AT school Reid's academic subjects were scheduled in the morning because he had PM fading. When he watched TV after school, he developed a habit of changing from show to show. Shows which relied on the visual were fine, as soon  as he had to work to listen to clever dialogue, he changed channels. He needed the break because our speech work came after.

Teenager Nocturnal?

I think the normal human teen is nocturnal, certainly my children preferred to stay up later and later, and sleep later and later. There was even a suggestion that the teenagers might learn more at school if we tailored the school day so they were at school during their peak hours.

So be a great parent, count up how much sleep your child is really getting, turn off the TV, and put the child to bed., Trust me, you'll like it.

Since she had the twins in January, I have had no trouble getting my daughter to bed.
