"What did you say?" "Eh?" "WHAT did you say?" "MM?" "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" oh "PARDON ME!"

How Forgiving of Ignorance must one Be?

Ignorance can be Cured by Learning

bullet It depends on who is being ignorant. Ignorance can be cured by learning something but people need time to learn.
bulletParents soon know more than the rest of the world about the child's problems. At first parents can be very involved with one method or another, and may see family or friend's "ignorant" suggestions or comments as criticism.

Protecting the Child

bullet A child cannot present his or her problems to the family, friends and siblings. That is the parent's job. The support of the audiologist should extend as far as is needed.
bulletDo not leave the child with anyone who does not fully understand  the child has hearing problems.

A Caretaker in Denial

bulletA caretaker in denial should be replaced.

Close Family Member in Denial

bulletA close family member in denial creates havoc. Work around the problem. Try sharing problems and ask for ideas.
bulletMy mother-in-law refused to see that our child had a problem hearing, in the end, this was not our problem, it was hers.
However the child could never be left with the grandparents.
